How the Character Counter Works

Character count is what most limits are measured in — a tweet is 280 characters, an SMS segment is 160, a meta description about 160, and many forms cap bios and headlines by character. This tool counts every character live as you type, including and excluding spaces, so you can trim to fit.

It also flags how many characters you have left for a Twitter/X post and how many 160-character segments a text message would take, since longer texts are billed as multiple segments.

characters = total length of the text, spaces included

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the count include spaces?

The headline count includes spaces and line breaks. A separate figure shows the count without spaces, which some limits use.

Why does SMS use 160 characters?

Standard text messages are sent in 160-character segments. Longer messages are split and billed as multiple segments, which this tool shows.

What is the Twitter/X character limit?

280 characters for a standard post. The counter shows how many you have left, or how far over you are.
