Your final exam is worth some percentage of your overall grade; the rest of your grade is already locked in. The calculator works out the score you need on the final so that your weighted average reaches the grade you want. Enter your current grade, how much the final counts, and your target.
If the number comes back above 100, your target is not reachable with the final alone; if it is zero or negative, you have already secured it. Enter an expected final score in the optional field to see the overall grade that would produce instead.
needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight
Take your target overall grade, subtract your current grade times the portion that is not the final, then divide by the final’s weight. With an 88% going into a final worth 20%, reaching 90% overall needs a 98% on the final.
Then your target is not reachable from the final exam alone, because even a perfect score would not raise your average enough. You would need extra credit or a lower target.
No — enter your grade before the final. The current grade should reflect everything except the final exam, and the weight is how much the final will add.
