Work out the floor area by multiplying length by width, then add a waste allowance — usually 10% for straight layouts and up to 15% for diagonal or patterned installs, to cover cuts, mistakes and future repairs. Divide by the square footage each box covers (printed on the label) and round up to whole boxes.
It works for laminate, vinyl, hardwood and tile. For rooms that aren’t rectangular, split them into rectangles, calculate each, and add the areas together before applying waste.
boxes = ceil(area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per box)
Multiply room length by width for the area, add about 10% waste, then divide by the coverage per box and round up.
About 10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal or patterned floors. More for lots of cuts around obstacles.
Break it into rectangles, calculate each area, add them, then apply the waste percentage to the total.
