This turns a step count into calories by way of distance. Divide your steps by your steps-per-mile (about 2,000 for an average adult) to get miles, then multiply by your weight and roughly 0.53 calories per pound per mile. Walking 10,000 steps at 160 pounds covers about 5 miles and burns roughly 424 calories.
Your true steps-per-mile depends on height and stride — taller people take fewer, longer steps. The 0.53 factor is a walking-pace average; a brisk pace or hills burn more. Treat the result as a solid estimate, not a precise measurement.
calories = (steps ÷ steps per mile) × weight × 0.53
For a 160-pound person, roughly 400–450 calories — about 5 miles of walking. It scales with your weight and stride length.
About 2,000 for an average adult walking, but it ranges from roughly 1,900 to 2,500 depending on height and pace.
No — it’s an estimate. Stride length, pace, terrain and fitness all affect the real number, so use it as a guide.
