When you buy the same stock at different prices, your average cost per share is the total money spent divided by the total shares bought — not the average of the prices. Buying 100 shares at $50 and 50 at $40 costs $7,000 for 150 shares, an average of $46.67. This calculator adds up to four purchases and works out your blended cost basis.
Your average cost is the break-even price: sell above it for a gain, below it for a loss. Adding shares at a lower price (averaging down) pulls the average toward the new price, weighted by size.
average cost = total spent ÷ total shares
Add up the total amount spent across all purchases and divide by the total number of shares. It’s weighted by how many shares you bought at each price.
Buying more shares after the price drops, which lowers your average cost. This calculator shows the new average.
Yes — ignoring fees and taxes, selling at your average cost per share breaks even.
