How the Slope Calculator Works

The slope of a line measures how steep it is — the change in y divided by the change in x, often called “rise over run.” Give the calculator two points and it finds the slope, then works out the y-intercept, the full equation of the line, the straight-line distance between the points and the angle the line makes with the horizontal.

Once you have the slope, the y-intercept comes from rearranging y = mx + b, and the distance uses the Pythagorean theorem on the horizontal and vertical gaps. A vertical line (no change in x) has an undefined slope, which the calculator reports rather than dividing by zero.

What does a negative slope mean?

A negative slope means the line goes down from left to right — as x increases, y decreases. A positive slope rises, a zero slope is flat, and a vertical line has an undefined slope.

How do I find the y-intercept from two points?

First find the slope, then substitute one point into y = mx + b and solve for b. The y-intercept is where the line crosses the y-axis, at x = 0.

What is the distance between the two points?

It is the straight-line distance, found with the Pythagorean theorem: the square root of the horizontal gap squared plus the vertical gap squared.
