The Cockcroft-Gault equation estimates the kidneys’ creatinine clearance (CrCl) from a patient’s age, sex, body weight and serum creatinine. It is widely used to guide renal dosing of medications. Enter the four values and the calculator returns an estimate in millilitres per minute.
Because it uses actual body weight, the estimate can run high in obesity and low in patients with little muscle mass, so some clinicians substitute ideal or adjusted body weight. Always interpret the number alongside the clinical picture and the specific drug label.
CrCl = (140 − age) × weight (kg) × (0.85 if female) ÷ (72 × serum creatinine)
It estimates creatinine clearance from age, sex, body weight and serum creatinine: (140 minus age) times weight in kg, times 0.85 for women, divided by 72 times serum creatinine.
Actual body weight is standard, though some clinicians use ideal or adjusted body weight in obesity. Use the weight your institution specifies.
