How far your steps carry you depends on your stride length, which scales with your height. A common estimate puts stride length at about 0.415 times height for men and 0.413 for women. Multiply your step count by that stride, then divide by 63,360 — the number of inches in a mile — to get the distance.
Enter your steps and height and the calculator returns miles and kilometres, along with the stride length it used. It is why the classic “10,000 steps” goal works out to roughly four to five miles for most people.
miles = steps × stridein ÷ 63,360
For most people, roughly 4 to 5 miles, depending on height and stride. A taller person covers more ground per step, so their 10,000 steps go further.
From height: about 0.415 × height for men and 0.413 × height for women. Measuring your own stride over a known distance is more precise, but this is a reliable estimate.
There are 63,360 inches in a mile (5,280 feet × 12). Dividing total step inches by that converts the distance from inches to miles.
