How the Running Calorie Calculator Works

Running burns calories mostly in proportion to how far you go and how much you weigh — pace matters surprisingly little, because covering the same distance takes roughly the same work whether you run it fast or slow. A good estimate is about 1.036 calories per kilogram of body weight per kilometre, which this calculator applies to your weight and distance.

That works out near the familiar “100 calories a mile” rule for an average-sized adult, scaling up for heavier runners and down for lighter ones. It’s the net figure — the extra burned above resting.

calories ≈ 1.036 × weight (kg) × distance (km)

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does running burn?

Roughly your body weight in kilograms per kilometre. A 150 lb (68 kg) runner burns about 340 calories over 3 miles.

Does running faster burn more calories?

Only a little for the same distance — distance and body weight matter most. Running faster burns more per minute but you finish sooner.

Is this gross or net calories?

It’s the net estimate — the calories burned above what you’d burn at rest over the same time.
