The remainder is what’s left over after dividing one whole number by another. 17 divided by 5 is 3 with a remainder of 2, because 5 goes into 17 three times (15) leaving 2. In programming this is the modulo operation, written 17 mod 5 = 2.
Remainders tell you whether one number divides evenly into another (a remainder of 0 means yes) and are the basis for finding even/odd numbers, cycles and clock arithmetic.
remainder = dividend − (quotient × divisor)
What’s left after dividing whole numbers. 17 ÷ 5 leaves a remainder of 2.
It returns the remainder of a division. 17 mod 5 = 2. It’s widely used in programming.
If the remainder is 0, it divides evenly — otherwise it doesn’t.
