How the ERA Calculator Works

Earned run average (ERA) is the number of earned runs a pitcher gives up per nine innings — the length of a standard game. Divide earned runs by innings pitched, then multiply by nine. A pitcher who allows 3 earned runs over 6 innings has a 4.50 ERA.

Lower is better: an ERA under 3.00 is excellent, around 4.00 is average, and above 5.00 is poor. Only earned runs count — runs that score due to errors are excluded.

ERA = earned runs ÷ innings pitched × 9

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate ERA?

Divide earned runs by innings pitched and multiply by nine. 3 earned runs in 6 innings is a 4.50 ERA.

What is a good ERA?

Under 3.00 is excellent, around 4.00 is league average, and over 5.00 is poor.

What counts as an earned run?

A run the pitcher is responsible for — runs that score because of fielding errors are unearned and don’t count.
