Match the fan’s blade span to the room’s floor area. A small room up to about 75 square feet suits a 29–36 inch fan; a standard bedroom (up to ~144 sq ft) a 36–42 inch fan; a large room (up to ~225 sq ft) a 44–50 inch fan; and a great room a 50–54 inch fan. A 14-by-12-foot room is 168 square feet, which calls for a 44–50 inch fan.
A fan that is too small barely moves the air; too large and it overpowers the space. For rooms over about 400 square feet or long, open layouts, two fans usually beat one big one. Hang the blades 8–9 feet off the floor and at least 18 inches from any wall.
fan span is chosen from room area (length × width)
Match blade span to floor area: up to 75 sq ft → 29–36 in, up to 144 → 36–42 in, up to 225 → 44–50 in, up to 400 → 50–54 in.
Yes — an oversized fan can feel overpowering and gusty in a small room. Sizing to the room’s area keeps the airflow comfortable.
Blades should sit about 8–9 feet above the floor and at least 18 inches from the nearest wall for good airflow and safety.
