How the Tax Bracket Calculator Works

The federal income tax is marginal: income is split into bands, and each band is taxed at its own rate. Being “in the 22% bracket” doesn’t mean all your income is taxed at 22% — only the dollars above the 22% threshold are. This calculator takes your taxable income and shows exactly how much tax comes from each bracket, along with your marginal rate (your top bracket) and effective rate (total tax over total income).

Seeing the breakdown makes a common worry disappear: a raise that pushes you into a higher bracket only taxes the new dollars at the higher rate — your existing income is untouched. Figures use the 2025 federal brackets for your filing status.

total tax = sum of (income in each bracket × that bracket’s rate)

Note: a federal estimate for the 2025 tax year using the standard deduction. It doesn’t include Social Security/Medicare (FICA), state or local tax, or credits and itemized deductions. Not tax advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tax bracket am I in?

Your bracket is set by your taxable income and filing status. Enter both and this calculator shows your marginal (top) bracket and the tax owed in each band below it.

If I move up a bracket, is all my income taxed more?

No. Only the income above the new threshold is taxed at the higher rate. Everything below keeps its lower rates, so a raise never lowers your take-home pay.

What’s the difference between this and taxable income?

Taxable income is what you enter — income after deductions. The bracket calculator then shows how that amount is taxed across the brackets.
