How the Sod Calculator Works
Sod is sold by the piece and by the pallet. Measure the area to cover (length times width), add a small waste allowance of about 5% for trimming around edges and curves, then divide by the coverage of each unit. A standard sod piece is 16 by 24 inches — about 2.67 square feet — and a pallet typically holds around 450 square feet.
For odd-shaped lawns, break the area into rectangles and add them up. Order a little extra rather than a little short, since running out mid-job means a second delivery and a colour mismatch from a different cut.
