A car’s 0-60 time is driven mostly by its power-to-weight ratio. This uses a well-known empirical estimate: about 0.8 times the weight-to-power ratio raised to the three-quarters power. A 3,500-pound car with 300 horsepower comes out near 5 seconds — close to what such a car actually runs.
It’s an estimate, not a dyno. Real acceleration also depends on traction, gearing, drivetrain (all-wheel drive launches harder), transmission and aerodynamics, so treat the number as a ballpark for comparing cars.

From the power-to-weight ratio — roughly 0.8 times (weight ÷ horsepower) to the 0.75 power. More power or less weight means a quicker time.
Traction, gearing, drivetrain, transmission and aerodynamics all matter. All-wheel-drive cars especially launch faster than this estimate suggests.
Both matter through their ratio. Cutting weight and adding power both improve acceleration; it’s the pounds-per-horsepower that counts.
