Grams measure weight and cups measure volume, so there is no single conversion between them — it depends on the ingredient. A cup of flour weighs about 125 grams, but a cup of sugar is about 200 grams and a cup of honey about 340. This converter uses the typical density of each ingredient to convert between grams and cups accurately.
Pick your ingredient and the tool divides grams by that ingredient’s grams-per-cup (or multiplies to go the other way), and also shows tablespoons and ounces. Baking is sensitive to ratios, which is why weighing in grams is more reliable than measuring by cup — this converter bridges the two.
cups = grams ÷ (grams per cup for that ingredient)
Because grams measure weight and cups measure volume. The same cup holds very different weights depending on the ingredient — flour is light, sugar heavier, honey heaviest — so you need each ingredient’s density.
A cup of all-purpose flour is about 125 grams when spooned and levelled. Packed or scooped flour weighs more, which is a common source of baking inconsistency.
For baking, yes. Weighing in grams removes the variation that comes from how tightly an ingredient is packed into a cup, giving more consistent results.
