How the Dunk Calculator Works

To dunk, your jump has to lift your hand above the rim with enough clearance to bring the ball down over it — about 6 inches. Subtract your standing reach (how high you touch flat-footed) from the rim height (120 inches on a regulation 10-foot hoop), then add 6 inches of clearance. If your standing reach is 90 inches, you need about a 36-inch vertical to dunk.

Standing reach is roughly 1.3 times your height, but measuring it directly is more accurate. Touching the rim needs less — just rim minus reach.

vertical to dunk = rim height + 6 in − standing reach

Frequently Asked Questions

What vertical do I need to dunk?

Rim height (120 in) plus about 6 inches of clearance, minus your standing reach. A 90-inch reach needs roughly a 36-inch vertical.

What is standing reach?

How high you can touch flat-footed with your arm up — about 1.3 times your height, but best measured directly.

How high is a basketball rim?

10 feet, or 120 inches, for regulation play.
